Go in a car, train, boat…the method or the destination doesn’t seem important to my dog. Truly its all about the journey for a dog.

5 Tips for walking a dog

Whether by car, train, boat or by foot the method doesn’t seem to matter to dogs.  Dogs like to go with their humans.  In other words, it is about the experience of being with their human.

These 5 tips for walking a dog:

  1. Know your destination and plan ahead.  Is it pet friendly?  Will the destination have water available for your dog, or do you need to bring a dog bowl. BYOB
  2. Butt sniffing will happen, be prepared to stop.  Depending on the length of the journey, plan a pit stop. Dogs need a break.
  3. Make sure your dog has their collar with tags.  Some types of dogs walk better with a harness. Make sure that these fit correctly.
  4. Pack a treat or snack, along with poop bags.  You never know when they will come in handy.  DOG HACK- the more treats your pack, the more bags you will need.
  5. Talk to your dog as you go.  Make it fun for you both of you.  They may not understand your sense of humor; but like your mom, they will still appreciate you.

An enjoyable outing is all about the experience of being out in the community and taking time to appreciate what is around you. Not all walks happen in great weather, here’s a few tips for walking in the rain.   Don’t rush the process, be in the present and maybe you’ll find something you want to sniff, like a rose.
